“God is a woman” is the second single from Ariana Grande’s fourth studio album, Sweetener, which refers to the pleasures of sex and, consequently, encourages the message of female sexual liberation and domination. The track was teased in her “no tears left to cry” music video, and was hinted again in the “no tears left to cry (BTS – Part 2)” video. It follows the lead single, No Tears Left To Cry, and promotional single The Light is Coming.
Through her interview with Time Magazine, the track is described as an “anthemic, sultry banger.” The production is described as having “Grande’s voice layered so that it sounds like a choir, but really, is only her, multiplied.”
According to Ariana during an interview with Jimmy Fallon on May 1, 2018, “God is a Woman” is one of her grandma’s favorite tracks.
The track was speculated to be released on July 20, 2018, following Grande’s “20th of each month” release schedule for the album. At midnight on July 12th, Grande tweeted that she would be releasing the song and music video early as a surprise.
